STATEMENT BY YDUA ON THE BRAWL IN THE PARLIAMENT OF GHANA 

All over the world parliamentary disagreements are a key part of the democratic process . Generally the principle of parliamnetary proceedings rest on superiority of debates and votes but occassionally , heated disagreements raises tempers which is understandable in all human endeavors .

The incidence in Ghana’s parliament on Monday , 20th December , 2021 , where Parliamentarians got involved in physical brawls is very disheartening and brings into questioning the standards and parliamentary orderliness . This is similar to an incident reported January this year on the floor of parliament .


At YDUA , we are particularly worried though Ghana’s situation is not in isolation . Such incidents happen around the world all the time , but considering Ghana’s Democratic status especially as an example to many democracies around the African continent , we hoped that such matters could have been managed better .

THE HISTORY 

We had hoped that Ghana will depart from examples set by Nepal in 2015 , Turkey in 2014, Georgia in 2013 , Greece in 2017  and even in Africa , the examples, such as in Nigeria , Algeria ,Kenya , Uganda , South Africa , Morroco and others . Beyond the negative precedence of such brawls , recorded history shows that such brawls may lead to very undesirable  outcomes like the death of Fevzi Sihanlioglu , when he was hit in his head during a heated brawl in January 2001 , in Turkish Parliament.

OUR PROPOSAL 

As partners of African democracies and young  people, we believe that the process of nation building must be founded on Consensus building , especially in times when the issues are closely argued and sensitive. The structure of parliament shows that , it has some of the most brilliant minds and can achieve a lot with consented efforts .

Beyond consensus building , representatives must remind themselves of their sacred duty and social contract with their people and do right by them . Such right can only be done in a very civil manner .


We hereby strongly call on the leadership of Ghana‘s parliament to as a matter of urgency put in place measures that will ensure such incidents do not repeat itself and the necessary example will be set not only for young followers but other young democracies on the continent.


Disagreement among MPs cannot be taken out in democratic regimes.However, Consensus building must be the recourse in times of intransigence. The furore is disappointing especially to Ghana’s beautiful and hard earned democracy but hopefully, it’s only but a phase in a growing democracy.

STATEMENT BY YDUA ON THE BRAWL IN THE PARLIAMENT OF GHANA

With efforts from all around the world , the Human Rights day is observed every year on the 10th December and presents an opportunity to confront the threats that face the protection of human rights.

As a youth front and a union committed to human development , we join the world in marking this year’s day , especially on the pillar of this year’s theme , EQUALITY – Reducing Inequalities , Advancing Human Rights  , a message we believe is clear and properly timed in line with the Universal Human Rights Declaration ,  Article 1 , “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

There are no dangerous threats to Human Rights than the threats of inequality and discrimination , and more often than  not , such instances are seen on the African continent and around the world  . In our quest to make progress in protecting Human Rights , it is important  we focus on these 3 things,

1.	For Governments to treat oppositions and political opponents with dignity and provide equal rights.
2.	Provide protection for women against human rights abuses and all forms of inequalities.
3.	Remove all forms of Vaccine Inequalities and injustices against minorities and vulnerable groups

We all as global citizens have a sacred duty towards the agenda 2030 and to provide true meaning to the adoption of the UHRD of 10th December ,1948 by the United Nations , that our nations shall REBUILD BETTER through Human Rights based economies to break cycles of poverty , provide equal opportunities for young people , reverse vaccine inequalities and injustices , advance the rights to healthy environment and climate justice.

Indeed all people of the world are born with inherent rights and dignity and the only assurance we all have in protecting our personal rights , is to defend the rights others , and we at YDUA committing to this , join the people of the world to commemorate this year’s Human Rights Day.
